| On
September 30th 1930 some members of the German community
in the southern region of the extended Buenos Aires brought
to life a school society with the purpose of founding
a school in Temperley. Teaching for 45 pupils began the
following year, once a provisional board had been elected.
These lessons took place in a private house in Temperley.
In
January 2005 the educational authorities officially
acknowledged the German School Temperley as the first
trilingual school in Argentina, with the language combination
Spanish- German- English. From class 4 to class 12 school
lessons are specialized in these three languages and
complemented in class 10 with German economy and business
English. These subjects are relevant for the promotion
of all the students.
Apart
from the Argentine trilingual final certification in
one of the two main branches- Humanities and Social
Sciences- students can obtain their German and English
language certificates and, of course, the Deutsche Sprachdiplom
issued by the German Ministry of Education and Cultural
Affairs- KMK, levels I and II, and the Goethe Institute
certificate in German economy, as well as the First
Certificate Cambridge and the Business Certificate in
English Cambridge. Moreover, the Temperley- School offers
in the area of the new technologies the final exam of
the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional- UTN and
the programme "Homo Videns" for the upper
levels in Argentina.
About
600 students attend the Temperley- School, which consists
of three buildings that accomodate the kindergarden,
the primary school and the high school. The German School
Society Temperley is affiliated to the study group of
the German schools in Argentina.
Every
year 120 adults and teenagers attend the language courses
that take place at the Language Academy of the Temperley-
School ( Language Centre of the Goethe Institute).
As
after its foundation the number of students increased
very quickly, a member of the board bought a building
for the school, that at first was called "Graf-Zeppelin-Schule"
and that later changed its name to "Mozart- Schule"
until 1945. On December 17th 1945 the Argentine government,
on account of political principles, closed all the German
schools in the country. All the students at the German
Temperley School, at the time under the name "Escuela
Argentina Modelo", completed the following school
year, until in February 1947 the school building and
its belonging lands were officially expropriated.
It
is true that at first it looked as if everything was
lost. However, in 1952 German lessons could be resumed.
In this way, the children descendants from German families,
and consequently their mother tongue, could be preserved.
The language courses took place at the German Gymnastics
Club Lomas de Zamora, which had been set up in 1943
by former students and board members of the Mozart-
Schule.
The
second period of the Temperley- School began in November
1959, when a group of former students and members of
the school board acquired a piece of land and put up
the new school building in a record time of three months.
Then, on March 28th 1960, teaching at the Temperley-
School could be resumed.
Some
adjacent land was bought with parents' and benefactors'
money and resources, as well as with the compensational
payment for the loss of ownership during the Second
World War, as result of which the school can still grow
and develop up to the present day.
In
1983 the kindergarden "Brothers Grimm" was
set up in one of the nextdoor properties. At the same
time it was decided to found the high school. Teaching
at the high school under the name "German School
Temperley" started in 1985, after the appropriate
approval from the Argentine educational authorities.
Due to lack of suitable room, the library "Biblioteca
Ricardo Gutierrez" in Lomas de Zamora was so kind
as to offer its facilities for the 24 students attending
the first high school course. By the end of 1989 the
Temperley- School, that in the meantime had been expanded
and reformed, could say goodbye to the first age group
that finished their studies there.
The
meeting of bilingual schools of the Province Buenos
Aires took place at the Temperley School on September
16th 2005. It was the first time that a German school
organized this kind of meeting. Among the participants
there were not only 450 headteachers, but also representatives
of the German, British, French and Italian embassies
and the provincial government.
Throughout
the years 2003- 2005 the country Conference of German
Schools in Argentina and their "Fine Arts Meetings"
took place at the Temperley- School.
The
Temperly- School is not bound to any denomination and
it offers different cultural and social activities,
such as intercultural meetings ( The Lantern Celebration,
The October Festival), aloud reading competitions, competitions
in "Science and Technology", sport perfomances,
school exchange with four German schools, study trips
to Peninsula Valdés, holiday camping at the country
home "Verónica", German film evenings,
choir music, stage plays, teacher development in three
languages, training for students trainee from the Teaching
College in Ludwigsburg and parents guidance. Moreover,
the school encourages soccer-, hockey- and volleyball
teams, parents' teams inclusive.
The
number of students at the Temperley School increases
yearly. Every year specialists give the teaching staff
(German programme teachers plus local teachers) further
training, in Germany or in Argentina. There is also
a community of parents that largely support the school
work.
